Coaching Assumptions

  • Coaching is about choice, assisting people to uncover new choices and resources to use.
  • The past does not dictate the future.
  • There is no such thing as failure only feedback; there are not mistakes only results. They are either results we like or results we don’t like.
  • The response you are getting is your responsibility. If you are not getting the response you want, it’s your responsibility to change your approach until you do.
  • People are not broken, they work perfectly well. They do not need to be fixed.
  • There is no such thing as unresourceful people, only unresourceful states. People have all the resources to make the changes they desire; they just need to tap into the correct emotional states to access them.
  • People make the best decisions given the resources that they have.
  • All external behaviour is the result of an internal process.
  • Our perception of reality is not reality. It is however real to us.
  • We do not operate directly on our world but rather through our perceptual map of the world.
  • Flexibility is key. The person with the most behavioural flexibility will control any situation
  • The meaning of your communication is the response you receive, regardless of your intention when you communicate. It is not the listener’s responsibility to get the message.
  • The highest quality of information in any interaction is behavioural. Watch your physiology, not your words.
  • The mind and body are all part of the same system.
  • People communicate on two levels, the conscious and unconscious.
  • Every behaviour has a positive intention for the person doing the behaviour – either to gain pleasure or avoid pain.
  • Success leaves clues. If you do what other people have done you will get the same results.
